UMSAでの英語コースの評価と考察（５月）

私はUMSA（Universidad Mayor de San Andres）のテクノロジーデパートメントにて
英語のコースを担当しました。
期間は５月からの３か月間という内容でございます。
もう８月でして、このコースも終わりに近づいてきました。つきまして、英語教師のインターンシップの節目として、私は今回はこのコースの評価と、考察を月ごとに書いていきたいと思います。
まず初めにたくさんの学生がテクノロジーディパートメントで英語を学びたかったのだと気がつかされました。
アメリカの大学と違い、この国ではほかの学部の授業を取るということはあまりできないそうでございます。
その学生諸君の中には奨学金を取りたかったり、もしくは英語をただ単に楽しむためにだけ学びたい学生たちもいたと思います。理由は人それぞれでございました。
このコースはほかの授業と違い、オープンコース、つまりはどの学部の人でもUMSAの学生なら取れる、というものでした。いいところは学生たちは普段話さないような人たちとも交流ができた、ということです。
しかし、英語を教えるということの難しさを実感しました。
というのも受講した学生の中にはすでにかなり英語ができる学生もいらっしゃいましたし、もしくは全くの初心者もおっしゃったからでございます。
何人かの方々はクラスを２つに分けるようにアドバイスしてくださりましたが、
大学の規定の授業があるなかで、時間を調整することが難しかったため、
学生のと話しをし、同じクラスで行うこととなりました。
どうすれば学生全員が英語を１つの教室で学ぶことができるのか？
私はそのことをたくさん考えました。
私は意図的に授業をすべて英語で行いました。これにより学生は早く、
そしてより多くを学べると思ったからです。
この作戦は半分くらいの学生に大変人気でございました。
彼らはそのことに喜んでくださいましたし、たくさん学んでくださいました。
しかしながら、もう半分は私が何を言っているのかわからなかったようで、あまり好評ではございませんでした。すべて英語といいましても話す内容は基礎文法（SV、SVO、SVCなど）を中心にしていましたが、すべて英語はきつかったようです。
もしあなたが海外で英語や言語を教えるとなれば、おそらく授業が始まるその前に、クラスがきちんとレベルごとに分けられているのかを確認、学生との十分なコミュニケーションをとったうえで、カリキュラムを構成したほうが、現地の学生のためにも良いと思います。また、どういった目的を持って言語を学んでいるのか、その目的に合わせた授業を行う必要があると感じました。
もしバラバラのレベルが共存していましたら、どうにか分けるなり、対策を考えた方がよろしいです。
私はそこが最初きちんとできなかったので、それは今でも後悔をしております。

Title: Evaluation and Thoughts on the English Course at Universidad Myor de San Andres (May)

The Technology department of Universidad Mayor de San Andres (aka UMSA) let me do an English course for 3 months.
Now it is almost August, so it is almost done. I would like to look back and talk about it a little.
So apparently there were so many students in that department who wanted to learn English. Unlike universities in the US, students cannot freely take classes from different departments.
Their dreams vary, but some of them must want to win a scholarship, some of them just wanted to learn it for fun.
The thing is, this course is an open one, which means students from any department of the university can take it.
That is really nice for students because they can interact with people whom they would never have hung out with.
But, it turned out to make my life so much more difficult because there were students who already spoke good English, and those who knew Zero English, mixed up in one class.
Some people advised me to divide the class into 2 but because UMSA did not have any open classroom anymore, I could not do that.
How could students on different levels learn English in the same class? I though about it a lot.
I intentionally spoke in English all the time so that they could learn faster and a lot more. This method worked really good for about half of them. They really enjoyed it and got me a lot of compliments.
However, the rest of half did not understand me fully.
Still, even in English, I talked about basic grammar points (ex, SV, SVC, SVO, etc), but those who were complete beginners did not catch what I was taking about.
If you are to teach English in a foreign country, you might have to make sure before you start teaching that the class is divided by students' levels.
If there are many different levels mixed up in one classroom, you have to figure out ways to deal with it.
I could not do that properly so I regret that a lot.
In the next blog post, I would like to talk about what happened in June and how I managed to deal with the situation!
